USTA/Midwest Tennis & Education Foundation Remembers Mary Seelig

Earlier this month, USTA/Midwest Tennis and Education Foundation Executive Director Mark Saunders announced that Mary Seelig, a popular Midwest Section official, junior tournament director and longtime volunteer passed away on Wednesday, March 15. Seelig had recently celebrated her 90th birthday in February.

Her philosophy was that that every junior player was a “winner” and a “learner.” She is fondly remembered as the “Gummy Bear Lady” because she always gave away gummy bears during her tournaments. Seelig was named the Chicago District Tournament Director of the Year, three times: 1983, 1991 and 1995. On the Section level, Seelig was a volunteer for over 20 years, serving on several junior committees including Junior Competition.

The USTA/Midwest Tennis & Education Foundation recognized her in January 2016 by naming her the Honorary Chair of the Foundation’s Charity Gala. Leading up to the event, the Foundation conducted its inaugural “Generations of Giving” campaign to honor Mary and her many years of service.

Per the request of her family, memorial contributions can be made to the USTA/Midwest Tennis & Education Foundation. To donate, click here. To donate by mail, please send to the following:
