USTA/MTEF Awards 2016 High School Senior Scholarships


Each year the USTA/Midwest Tennis & Education Foundation (USTA/MTEF) awards scholarships to high school seniors who are in need of financial assistance to further their college educational pursuits. The scholarships are designed to reward youth players with funding to advance both their educational and tennis interests.

USTA/MTEF is excited to announce the 2016 recipients of the Tim & Tom Gullikson, Hooked on Tennis, Rick Van Horn, and Richard Bradley Scholarships. Please click here to learn more about each of our scholarships.

Michael Roehmer - Mt. Pleasant, Michigan - Tim & Tom Gullikson Scholarship

Roehmer has played varsity tennis all four years at Mt. Pleasant Senior High School. Roehmer has been the team's Most Valuable Player during his four years on the team, and was named to the All-Conference team and All-State team. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Armstrong has participated in USTA/Midwest Section team events during his junior career.

Off the tennis court, Roehmer serves as his High School Senior Class President. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and participates in other after school activities. Roehmer received the Mid-Michigan Academic Award and named the Business Professionals of America State Champion. He plans to study Kinesiology/Business Administration and play club tennis when he attends the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, this coming fall.

Allison Himes - Indianapolis, Indiana - Tim & Tom Gullikson Scholarship

Himes has played varsity tennis this year at Noblesville High School and previously played three years at Lawrence Central High School. Himes captains her tennis team this year, and was named Second Team All Conference, All State, All District and All State. Besides playing high school tennis, Himes participated in the USTA Junior Team Tennis program in her community. She currently plays in the USTA League program, and has competed in USTA/Midwest tournaments throughout the Midwest as a junior player.

In addition to playing tennis, Himes has received academic honors as well as an English award, and participates in after school activities. Himes' passion for tennis finds volunteering with a local Community Tennis Association which offers tennis programming for youth players. She is also a certified USTA official working events, and has volunteered with a local boys' tennis team as well as local middle school tennis clinic. Himes plans to play collegiate tennis and major in Professional Tennis Management at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, this coming fall.

Zach Hennessey - Carmel, Indiana - Hooked on Tennis Scholarship

Hennessey has played four years of varsity tennis at Carmel High School. Hennessey was named First Team All Doubles, Academic All State, and Senior All Star. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis, Hennessey also competes in USTA tournaments, and participates in a USTA Junior Team Tennis program in his local community.

Off the tennis court, Hennessey is a DECA State Champion (student centered organization for those in marketing education classes). He is member of the National Honor Society, and outside of tennis coaches six grade basketball at a local school. Hennessey helped start a Special Olympics tennis program in Indianapolis, and still volunteers with the program as well as a wheelchair tennis program. Hennessey plans to major in International Business and play collegiate tennis while attending Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, this coming fall.

Dana Huck - Huntertown, Indiana - Hooked on Tennis Scholarship

Huck played varsity tennis this year at Carroll High School. In addition to playing varsity high school tennis she participated in club volleyball. Huck currently competes in USTA tournaments, and previously participated in a USTA Junior Team Tennis program. Huck has participated in USTA/Midwest Section team events during her junior career.

Huck's activities outside of tennis include Shakespeare Playworks and volunteering at a local church. Huck has volunteered providing tennis instruction with her family at an after-school program as well as offering clinics for local organizations and coordinating tournaments. She plans to attend Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., this coming fall majoring in Elementary Education while playing on the collegiate tennis team.

Mary Mullaney - South Bend, Indiana - Rick Van Horn Scholarship

Mullaney has played varsity tennis all four years at Saint Joseph High School. Mullaney is the team captain, and finished as a Regional and Sectional Champion. Besides playing high school tennis, she has participated in USTA/Midwest Section tournaments throughout her junior career.

In addition to playing tennis, Mullaney is a member of the National Honor Society and sings in her high school choir. She has been named to the South Bend Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Team. Mullaney teaches tennis to younger players at a local facility, and volunteers in various areas with local churches. Mullaney plans to attend Marian University in Indianapolis, Ind., in the fall, and major in Business Marketing. She also plans to play collegiate tennis at Marian University.

Drew Wright - Chicago, Illinois - Richard Bradley Scholarship

Wright has played tennis all four years at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy High School in Chicago. She participates in tennis through a local organization, Love to Serve, Inc., where she is active in the USTA Junior Team Tennis program and National Junior Tennis & Learning program. Wright has participated in the American Tennis Association (ATA) National tournament as well as the ATA Mid-Tac tournament in Indianapolis each summer. She is also involved with a USTA after-school tennis club in high school. Wright is a tennis instructor for the Love to Serve, Inc., organization and also volunteers her time at a local hospital.

Off the tennis court, Wright is an honor student and will graduate from high school finishing with a GPA of 4.59. She plans to major in Pre-Medicine and Biology at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana, this coming fall.
